Techniques Used to Shave Pubic Hair

Shaving pubic hair for men and women has been done since ancient times, in cultures around the world, mainly for personal hygiene. Most men and women choose to keep their pubic hair trimmed neatly rather than attempting to shave themselves bare. If you decide to shave your pubic hair, choose a technique that works best for you. Does this Spark an idea?

First-Time Techniques

  • Shave in the evening so you may be able to walk around nude for a while. It's best not to have clothing rubbing on your newly shaved pubic area. Later, wear boxer shorts (male and female) and only loose clothing.
Trim your pubic hair down to a quarter of an inch with scissors, if this is your first time shaving. Or using a beard trimmer, trim your pubic hair a bit shorter every week to get used to having less hair on your genitals before shaving. Trim your hair a few days before shaving.
Make sure you have very good lighting and a standalone mirror before starting. Take a warm bath or shower, getting your pubic area soaked in water for a few minutes to soften your hairs. Exfoliate using a wash cloth or loofah sponge lightly to remove dead skin and ingrown hairs.
Sit on the edge of your bathtub or toilet seat, spread your legs far apart to make your skin taut, and apply a good, thick shaving gel or cream. Let the gel sit for four minutes.
Always use a good quality razor, not a cheap disposable razor. A bikini area razor is best, even for men. If you use an electric razor, make sure it is a quality razor and trim your pubic hair before using it, so your electric razor works better.
Using a new razor blade, shave a little bit of your hair for your first time. Return later and shave a little more to help you and your sensitive skin adjust to the change. Take your time. It's okay if your shaving isn't very close -- close shaves will come with experience.
Afterward, pat your skin dry with a towel. Gently exfoliate again with a loofah sponge to prevent ingrown hairs. Apply a scent-free, mild lotion, witch hazel or aloe vera gel on your shaved areas. Avoid all talc or alcohol-based shaving lotions -- they cause irritation. Limit your shaving to once each month until you get used to it.

Female Techniques

  • After trimming your pubic hair, shave your outer labia first with a new razor blade. Shave in the direction of your hair growth. Shaving in the opposite direction results in a smoother shave but you're more prone to ingrown hairs. Leave the short hair on your mound for now. Use the Bikini Zone brand of cream after shaving which is very soothing.
Over the next couple weeks, experiment with various razors and shaving creams on your mound to see what works best for you, without irritation. Shave just a small area of your mound as you experiment. If you keep getting rashes, you may have to keep short pubic hair on your mound. If you can shave, understand you must keep shaving every two to three days to avoid itching.
Wear no panties, pants or tight jeans, just skirts and dresses. A shaved vulva means clothing can't rub against it, preventing ingrown hairs and irritation.

Male Techniques

  • Use an electric trimmer to remove your pubic hair at first, rather than scissors, so your hair is neat and evenly trimmed. Use a shaving cream made for sensitive skin, such as the Neutrogena or Colgate brands. Apply lots of shaving cream to your scrotum and penis shaft so you have a good, thick lather. Using a brand new razor, start at your penis head and stroke down to the base, continuing around your shaft. Shave the pubic hair at your shaft base, then around your testicles last. Take your time. Use a smooth, upward motion when shaving your testicles.

Warnings

  • Be aware of health consequences from shaving your pubic hair, such as cuts, ingrown hairs, razor burn, pimples, genital infections and folliculitis, a hair follicle infection.
Never shave your pubic hair if you've been drinking alcohol, using drugs or are sleepy.
Always use a new razor blade every time you shave. Shaving pubic hair dulls the blade quickly. Rinse your razor after each stroke to keep the blade clear of hair.

What Is the Purpose of Female Pubic Hair?

What Is the Purpose of Female Pubic Hair?
Female pubic hair is often viewed as unnecessary, so many women make the decision to shave it. Like other types of hair on the body, there is a reason women develop pubic hair once they reach puberty. Medical experts have come up with quite a few different theories for the purpose of female pubic hair.

Pheromones

  • The most widespread theory on the reason women have pubic hair has to do with pheromones and the role that they play in sexual attraction. Pheromones are odors produced by the body that attract members of the opposite gender. There are some people who have very strong odors, and some with odors that are not quite as noticeable to others. Pubic hair may play a role in capturing and emitting pheromones from the genitals into the air, according to Columbia University.

Warmth

  • Another theory on the purpose of female pubic hair is that it was meant to keep the genital area warm. Before people wore clothing as they do today, pubic hair may have offered some protection. According to Health Services at Columbia University, this theory is debatable because men would have more pubic hair and it should cover a woman’s lower torso to keep her internal reproductive organs warm.

Protection

  • Some people believe that female pubic hair is there to provide women with protection against infection. According to the University of California, Santa Barbara, it is thought that pubic hair may help prevent foreign particles from entering the vagina. Under this theory, one can compare pubic hair to eyelashes, which protect the eyes. A controversial question which is raised about this theory is why men do not have pubic hair surrounding the opening of their urethra.

Comfort

  • According to Planned Parenthood, Dr. Stephen Juan has a theory that says the purpose of pubic hair is to prevent skin irritation. Pubic hair helps to reduce friction during body movement. It also helps to reduce friction between the skin and tight clothing. Without pubic hair, the skin may be more susceptible to chafing or rashes. This is one of the less widespread theories on the purpose of female pubic hair.

Decoration

  • Some believe that decoration is the only purpose that female pubic hair serves. The acceptance of pubic hair varies according to culture, as well as every individual’s personal preferences. While some may prefer to shave their pubic hair, others may want to style it uniquely, trim it or leave it entirely natural. The way that a woman chooses to style her pubic hair can increase her partner’s sexual attraction toward her.

How to Shave your Pubic Hair (For Women)

How to Shave your Pubic Hair (For Women) thumbnail
Shaving your pubic hair offers no medical benefits.
Removing pubic hair dates back to ancient Egypt and Greece, where prostitutes shaved to identify their profession and promote cleanliness, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Today, women remove their pubic hair for different reasons. There are various methods of hair removal options, from waxing to shaving. Many women choose to shave their pubic hair instead of other methods of hair removal because it's inexpensive and you can do it without leaving your home. Regardless of your reason for shaving, it is essential to shave properly to prevent ingrown hairs, cuts and rashes. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1
Trim your public hair carefully with a pair of sharp scissors if your pubic hair is long. This makes shaving easier since there's less hair to remove with your razor. When trimming with scissors, it helps to stand over a towel to reduce the mess.
    • 2
Prepare your pubic hair and skin for shaving. The easiest way to do this is to sit in your bathtub. Let your skin soak in warm water for at least five minutes to moisten your skin, making it easier to shave. You can also add conditioner to coarse hair to soften it up.
    • 3
Use a new, sharp razor. Using a dull razor when shaving your pubic hair will likely lead to razor burn, cuts and ingrown hairs, as the razor snags and tugs on the hairs instead of cutting them cleanly.
    • 4
Rub generous amounts of shaving cream or shaving gel onto your pubic hair before shaving. Avoid using gels with fragrances, since they may irritate your skin. Shave in the direction in which your hair grows. Rinse your razor often to remove excess hair.
    • 5
Rinse your skin thoroughly with warm water when you're finished shaving to remove excess shaving cream and hairs. If desired, apply baby oil or aloe vera to your skin to soothe it.
