How to Shave Your Back

Back hair is a common issue for many people. Luckily, shaving your back is very easy, especially if you have some one to help you. Follow the steps below for a clean-shaven back.

Method 1 of 3: Preparation

  1. Shave Your Back Step 1.jpg
    1
Find some one to help you shave. A friend or partner can help you shave your back. This makes the process a lot easier than doing it all by yourself.

  2. Shave Your Back Step 2.jpg
    2
Trim the hair on your back.
    • If you have electric clippers, this step is as simple as having your friend plug in the clippers and trim down the hair on your back.
    • If you don't have clippers handy, have your friend use a comb and scissors to trim down your hair. This will make shaving your back quicker and easier. [1]
  3. Shave Your Back Step 3.jpg
    3
Rinse off. Hop into the shower and rinse the trimmed hair off of your back. Once you've rinsed off any loose hairs, you will be ready to start shaving.

Method 2 of 3: Shaving Your Back

  1. Shave Your Back Step 4.jpg
    1
Have your friend rub shaving cream onto your back. Make sure that they cover the entire area that you want shaved.
  2. Shave Your Back Step 5.jpg
    2
Slowly shave the back. Be sure that your friend is not applying too much or too little pressure while shaving your back. Have him or her rinse the razor after each stroke for more effective shaving.
    • Your friend should be shaving in the opposite direction of your hair growth for the smoothest shave.
    • Don't go over the same spot too many times, as it may cause a rash or cut.

Method 3 of 3: Aftercare

  1. Shave Your Back Step 6.jpg
    1
Rinse off excess shaving cream. After the shaving cream has been rinsed off, check if your friend has missed any spots. Reapply shaving cream and shave off any spots that might have been missed.
  2. Shave Your Back Step 7.jpg
    2
    Dry off with a towel.
  3. Shave Your Back Step 8.jpg
    3
Have your friend rub lotion into skin.
  4. Shave Your Back Step 9.jpg
    4
    You're done!

  2. Care for Itchy and Irritated Skin Step 2.jpg
    2

    3
Get out of the shower and pat dry your skin with a towel. Don't rub!
  4. Care for Itchy and Irritated Skin Step 4.jpg
    4
Apply a lotion all over yourself. Be sure to use a good one, not that cheap one you got at the dollar store.

How to Give a Facial

Want to get rid of those pesky pimples and even out your skin tone? Professional salon facials are the fast track to a better complexion, but are very expensive. You can give a friend a great facial at home with supplies you already have on hand. Hopefully she'll return the favour!

Steps

  1. Give a Facial Step 1.jpg
    1
Wash your hands thoroughly with anti-bacterial soap and hot water. Bacteria and/or dirt on your hands blocks pores, causing spots.
    Ad
  2. Give a Facial Step 2.jpg
    2
Using a ponytail holder, tie back long hair and pull hair back from the face using a headband.
  3. Give a Facial Step 3.jpg
    3
Wash your face using a mild cleanser. For dry skin, a gentle cleanser. For oilier skin, any oil free blackhead eliminating wash is recommended. Thoroughly rinse the face, leaving no traces of cleanser.
  4. Give a Facial Step 4.jpg
    4
Use an exfoliating scrub in a circular motion on your face and neck, but avoiding the eye area (nothing south of the eyebrow or north of the eye socket). Rinse the skin thoroughly with a soft, clean wash cloth and warm water.
  5. Give a Facial Step 5.jpg
    5
Pat face dry with a clean towel.
  6. Give a Facial Step 6.jpg
    6
Apply a facial mask and leave on for about 10 minutes.
  7. Give a Facial Step 7.jpg
    7
Wash off the mask with warm water and a wash cloth.
  8. Give a Facial Step 8.jpg
    8
Apply an alcohol free toner to a cotton ball and wipe on face, especially to the t-zone.
  9. Give a Facial Step 9.jpg
    9
Apply a moisturizer and you should feel clean and smooth and have a nice glow to your skin.
  10. Give a Facial Step 10.jpg
    10
Repeat this facial weekly, but wash your face twice daily.

Alternative Approach

  1. Give a Facial Step 11.jpg
    1
Pull hair off the face and start with a large clean pot. The opening of the pot should be larger in width than your face. A pot that you would use to boil pasta in would be best. Wash your hands and face and pour about 2 cups of distilled water in the pot. You can pick up distilled water at any local drug store, costing about $2.00 or less.
  2. Give a Facial Step 12.jpg
    2
Bring the 2 cups of water to a rolling boil and shut off stove. Keep your face about 12 inches from the top of the pot (use a stool to stand on if needed). Do not put your face into the pot. Also, never “tent” your face with a towel. This can actually cause your skin to burn. The steam needs to flow freely. If not, this can actually slightly burn the skin. Steam no more, and no less, then 10 minutes.
  3. Give a Facial Step 13.jpg
    3
Wipe the skin gently with an astringent, when the pores are open. It is advisable to use an astringent with no alcohol, especially for those with sensitive skin.
  4. Give a Facial Step 14.jpg
    4
Moisten the face with lukewarm water. Take your daily cleanser for your specific skin type and cleanse skin with a gentle circular motion for about 1 minute. Rinse.
  5. Give a Facial Step 15.jpg
    5
Extract gently any white/blackheads or pimples. The steaming process makes this easier and less damaging to the skin. If a pimple does not extract easily, do not force it as this can irritate it and possibly damage the skin. It is simply not ready to be extracted.
  6. Give a Facial Step 16.jpg
    6
Wipe skin again with the astringent and use an exfoliating cleanser with natural AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) on moist face. Exfoliate with gentle circular motion for 2 minutes. Rinse skin with lukewarm water.
  7. Give a Facial Step 17.jpg
    7
Pat skin gently. This is when you will apply a masque. Leave on for about 10-15 minutes. During this time, you may want to lie down and put relaxing music on. Take deep, relaxing breaths as you would during meditation or yoga.
  8. Give a Facial Step 18.jpg
    8
Remove masque with a moist cotton washcloth. Rinse skin by splashing distilled water on face. The distilled water should be at room temperature.
  9. Give a Facial Step 19.jpg
    9
Take a clean cotton wash cloth and dampen it with cool water. Lay down and cover your face with this and apply gentle pressure. Leave on for about 5 minutes. This will help to close pores.
  10. Give a Facial Step 20.jpg
    10
Apply anti-aging treatment and moisturizer. If heading outdoors, use a sunscreen that does not clog pores.

Tips

  • If you really want to keep your skin under control, the best thing to do is have a routine. Wash, tone and moisturize twice a day, everyday.
  • Make time for your D.I.Y facial once a week.
  • After you've done your facial, don't wear make-up for a few hours to give your skin a break.
  • Apply a little tea tree oil to any really big pimples.
  • Pick a face mask depending on your skin type. Clay masks are great if your have oily or pimple-prone skin. If you have sensitive skin stay away from peel-off masks.
  • For super soft skin, apply the moisturizer while your skin is still wet, to lock in the moisture.
  • See other articles on how to make a facial mask.

Warnings

  • Always make sure to test ANYTHING going on your face at least a week BEFORE a BIG DATE, or OTHER OCCASION! There's only so much that make-up can cover before you just look plain silly!

How to Remove Hair With Chemical Hair Removers

If you are tired of shaving every other day or maybe even every day, you will really appreciate this type of product! It will keep the skin smooth so much longer than shaving.

Steps

  1. Remove Hair With Chemical Hair Removers Step 1.jpg
    1
There are a few different brands and types of chemical hair removers, also called depilatories. Some are a lotion-type hair remover and others are spray on. Two popular brands are Nair and Sally Hansen, which are both affordable. You can find all different kinds at your local drugstore. Experiment and find which one works for you!

  2. Remove Hair With Chemical Hair Removers Step 2.jpg
    2
Once you have it picked out, gather everything you need. Doing this in the bathroom will help a lot.
  3. Remove Hair With Chemical Hair Removers Step 3.jpg
    3
Put a small patch of the product on the inside of your wrist. Wait at least a few hours, but 24 hours is better. If it seems to cause any discomfort, don't use it. But if it itches, don't worry too much because it will make your skin itch a bit. Just use your own judgment.
  4. Remove Hair With Chemical Hair Removers Step 4.jpg
    4
If using a rub-on type, put a large amount in your hand and spread thickly on desired area. Wait 4 minutes and wipe a small part off. If the hair is removed easily, rinse or wipe off the rest. If not, keep it on for a few more minutes. Don't keep it on for more than 10 minutes.
  5. Remove Hair With Chemical Hair Removers Step 5.jpg
    5
The spray on kind is basically the same as above, except you spray it on.

Tips
  • Tips
  • If it dried your skin out, apply some alcohol-free lotion. If you use lotion containing alcohol it will sting and further irritate the skin.
  • Shower after, to get rid of the smell.
  • If you are removing facial hair, make sure you are using one specifically made for your face. If you use the body kind, it will REALLY irritate you skin.
  • For hard to reach areas, such as your back, ask a friend or relative to help you.

Warnings

  • It will itch, depending on how much you can stand, a lot or a little. Be prepared!
  • Keep a close eye on any reactions, especially the first few times you use a chemical hair remover.

How to Epilate Legs

Are you tired of having to shave your legs every day and want perfect legs? Epilating gives you sexy and perfect legs and gives you the same results as waxing.

Steps

  1. Epilate Legs Step 1.jpg
    1
    Buy a good quality epilator.
    Ad
  2. Epilate Legs Step 2.jpg
    2
Soak your legs in a bath/shower for 6-10 minutes. This is to soften your legs so the hairs will be easier to remove. After, pat your legs dry.
  3. Epilate Legs Step 3.jpg
    3
Rub ice cubes on your legs. This will numb them so the pain won't be as bad. Pat your legs dry with a towel after you have finished.
  4. Epilate Legs Step 4.jpg
    4
Switch on your epilator and stroke it up towards you. If you stroke the epilator down your legs, you won't remove much hair. The key is to stroke the opposite of in which direction the hair grows.
  5. Epilate Legs Step 5.jpg
    5
After epilating, apply a lotion with aloe vera on your legs to avoid irritation.
  6. Epilate Legs Step 6.jpg
    6
Time to show off your new sexy legs!
    Ad

  • Tips
  • There is no need to epilate every day because the hairs will grow after one to two weeks, depending on how thick your leg hairs are.
  • If this hurts the first time, it's because you're new to epilating.
  • Give epilating a chance, even if it hurts.

Warnings

  • If your legs are irritated and red after one day, organise a visit to your local dermatologist.

How to Remove Your Mustache (for Girls)

When Mom said you were “sprouting” into a beautiful young woman, this probably wasn’t what you had in mind. To hide or remove upper-lip hair, use one of the methods below.

Method 1 of 5: Bleach Method

  1. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 1 Version 2.jpg
    1
Choose a cream bleach for facial hair. Cream bleach is appropriate for lightening hairs that are not completely black, just dark. It lasts for up to 2 weeks. Be sure to onlychoose bleach that is recommended for use on the face; since the skin here is so sensitive, you have to be extra careful to avoid irritation.
    • If applicable, choose a cream that suits your skin type (ex. dry, oily, etc.).
    Ad
  2. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 2 Version 2.jpg
    2
Spot-test the cream. Apply a small dab to a sensitive but safe area (such as the skin of your inner wrist) to make sure you don’t react. Leave on for the recommended amount of time (read the box for instructions), wash away thoroughly, and wait at least another 10 or 15 minutes to make sure you don’t itch or turn red.
  3. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 3 Version 2.jpg
    3
    Wash your face.
  4. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 4 Version 2.jpg
    4
Apply the bleach to your mustache area. The cream should come with an applicator, but if it doesn’t, use a popsicle stick or put on gloves and use a finger. Be very careful not to get it on your lip itself or near the delicate skin in your nostrils, which can cause your skin to react.
  5. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 5 Version 2.jpg
    5
Wait most of the recommended time, then wipe away a small amount to test if it has worked. Use a Q-tip or cotton pad to wipe the cream away (wipe away from your nose/mouth, not toward them) and check to see if the hair is light. If not, wait a little longer.
    • Ideally, bleaching cream should not be used on the skin for more than 10 minutes because it’s so hard on the skin. If your cream recommends more time than this, test it at the 10-minute mark anyway; if it has worked, remove the rest.
  6. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 6 Version 2.jpg
    6
Wipe away the remaining cream. Again, use cotton pads or something similar to wipe up the cream and don’t get it on any sensitive areas.
  7. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 7 Version 2.jpg
    7
Thoroughly rinse your skin. Rinse more than you think you need to so that no residue will irritate your skin.

Method 2 of 5: Wax Method

  1. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 8 Version 2.jpg
    1
Choose a wax that is appropriate for facial hair. Waxing removes hair entirely and can be done at home with a kit purchased from a drug store. You can either get spreadable wax and strips or ready-made strips that already have wax applied (which is the tidier option).
    • Waxing is only possible if the hairs are long enough for the wax to catch on. If you aren’t willing to let your hairs grow long enough to do this, either look for a short-hair wax (some claim to be able to wax as little as 2mm of growth, though their effectiveness varies) or use another option listed here (such as bleaching).
  2. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 9 Version 2.jpg
    2
Take a hot shower, steam your face over a bowl, or wash your face in warm water. The warmer your skin, the more open your pores – and the easier the hairs will be to remove.
  3. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 10 Version 2.jpg
    3
Heat up the wax if necessary. Most waxes must be warmed up, but wax strips are sometimes the exception. Read the instructions on your box for explicit details.
  4. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 11 Version 2.jpg
    4
Spread wax over the mustache area if necessary. Use the applicator that comes with the kit to spread it carefully, avoiding the delicate skin on your lips.
  5. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 12 Version 2.jpg
    5
Apply a strip over your mustache area. Start on one side and smooth it firmly over the entire area, avoiding folds and air pockets.
  6. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 13 Version 2.jpg
    6
    Wait the recommended time.
  7. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 14 Version 2.jpg
    7
Quickly rip the strip off on one motion. It will take the wax and your hair with it, but be forewarned that it will almost certainly hurt the first few times you try it. Don’t rip it off slowly or in several motions; this will make things worse.
  8. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 15 Version 2.jpg
    8
Thoroughly rinse your skin. Make sure not to leave any residue.
  9. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 16 Version 2.jpg
    9
Manually pluck any hairs you missed. If your upper lip is still sore from the waxing, you may want to wait a while before doing this.

Method 3 of 5: Depilatory Cream Method

  1. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 17 Version 2.jpg
    1
Choose a depilatory cream that is appropriate for facial hair. Depilatory creams painlessly cause hair to fall out from the root, but because the chemicals involved in this process are harsh, it’s best to select a cream designed for delicate facial skin.
  2. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 18 Version 2.jpg
  3. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 19 Version 2.jpg
    3
Spread a thick coat of cream over your upper lip. You can do this with gloves if you prefer, but since the cream needs time to take effect, you can also use you bare hands and then wash thoroughly with soap and water.
  4. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 20 Version 2.jpg
    4
Wait most of the recommended time, then wipe away a small amount to test if it has worked. When possible, it’s better to use it for less time to prevent your skin from becoming irritated. If it’s not ready, wait a little longer.
  5. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 21 Version 2.jpg
    5
Wipe away the remaining cream. Use a paper towel or cotton pads.
  6. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 22 Version 2.jpg
    6
Thoroughly rinse your skin. Rinse more than you think you need to so that no residue will irritate your skin. If some hairs do not come off easily, just try rubbing them gently with water. If that doesn't work, take a bath. The steam coming from the bath should make tough hairs come out on their own.
  7. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 23 Version 2.jpg
    7
Manually pluck any hairs the cream missed.
  8. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 24 Version 2.jpg
    8
Apply a gentle cream afterwards (optional). On the one hand, the area may feel dry and in need of a little TLC, but on the other, using too much product on already-irritated skin might cause the pores to clog. Choose based on how comfortable your skin feels when the process is over.

Method 4 of 5: Epilator Method

  1. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 25 Version 2.jpg
    1
Choose an epilator that’s appropriate for facial hair. An epilator is a hand-held device that pulls hairs up by the root when moved across skin. The plucking heads on a body epilator will be too cumbersome to use on the upper lip, so you’ll have to shop around for a slim model designed for facial hair, touchups, and other small-scale work
    • Epilating is only possible if the hairs are long enough for the epilator to catch. If you aren’t willing to let your hairs grow long enough to do this, use another option listed here (such as bleaching).
  2. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 26 Version 2.jpg
    2
Take a hot shower, steam your face over a bowl, or wash your face in warm water. The warmer your skin, the more open your pores – and the easier the hairs will be to remove.
  3. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 27 Version 2.jpg
    3
Hide your lips by pressing them together. This will not only make the skin above the lip easier to access, but also keep your delicate lip skin away from the epilator.
  4. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 28 Version 2.jpg
    4
Slowly run the epilator over the skin above your upper lip. Unless you’re very used to plucking these hairs, be warned that it will probably hurt. You will get used to this with time, but in the beginning, it will be uncomfortable.
    • Start with the slowest speed. Until you get the hang of epilating, just remember that easy does it.
  5. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 29 Version 2.jpg
    5
Manually pluck any hairs you missed. If your upper lip is sore, you may want to wait a while before doing this.

Method 5 of 5: Electrolysis or Laser Removal Method

  1. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 30 Version 2.jpg
    1
Weigh the benefits of each method. Both of these have the potential to be permanent solutions (after enough treatments) and can help people whose lip hair is due to hormonal imbalances, for example.
    • During electrolysis, a tiny needle is inserted into the hair follicle, where it creates a current that kills the root of the hair. It’s a tedious, one-hair-at-a-time process – that needs to be repeated many times – but since the upper lip is a tiny area, this won’t matter as much.
    • During laser-hair removal, a laser is used to zap many hair follicles at once and kill hair at the root. You need fewer sessions than with electrolysis, but it’s significantly more expensive. Because the lasers are best at targeting dark hairs that stand out against light skin, it’s not ideal for dark-skinned or light-haired people.
  2. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 31 Version 2.jpg
    2
Carefully research locations, practitioners, and prices. Some places have better machines, more qualified specialists (always make sure they’re licensed), and happier reviews than others. Never choose a location based on their testimonials.
  3. Remove Your Mustache (for Girls) Step 32 Version 2.jpg
    3
Have realistic expectations. While laser hair removal and electrolysis can have permanent effects and work wonders for some people, they can also be painful and are not guaranteed for everyone. Moreover, the treatments can be painful and expensive. If possible, talk to other people who’ve had it done for their insights.

Tips

  • The best time to get rid of your mustache is before bed. That way your skin has all night to get over any redness, irritation, swelling, etc.
  • Use an ice pack afterwards to soothe irritation.
  • Don't go in the sun for 24 hrs after waxing to prevent your upper lip from getting a dark pigment.
  • Laser treatment can permanently remove hair, but it can be very pricey. It might be easier to just wax each month.
  • If you happen to be a girl that has enough upper-lip hair that you feel you must do something about it, consider using tweezers to remove the hair. It is an easy process to master with just a bit of practice. Using tweezers has the added benefit costing next to nothing, and it can be done very discretely in your own home. It is, of course, not a painless experience, but as you get used to doing it on a regular basis you will discover methods to minimize some of the pain while also getting used to it.
  • Threading is a great alternative for those with sensitive skin, as it won't leave your skin red and blotchy for days. The best way to do this is to go to the salon, but once you understand the concept of threading, it is easy to do yourself with the only cost being thread.

Warnings

  • Never use cream for longer than directed, as this may cause severe burning of the upper lip.
  • Don’t shave your upper lip. Because the hairs all grow back at the same length, the result not only feels stubbly, but also gives the illusion of having grown back thicker (just like a new, even haircut makes your hair look thicker because all the ends are bunched up next to each other).
  • Don't do this on the day before the big date. Give your skin some time to recover.
  • Depilatory cream does not work on very thick hair.
  • Be careful of certain products for hair removal. Many cannot be used on the face because they might cause side effects. Some that can be used on the face will still irritate your skin.
